Howard Morey at the controls of an airplane that advertised Pennco Oil, his distributorship of Waco airplanes, and his flying school—diverse operations typical of commercial airline operations when this photograph was taken in 1928. Because of the oil company support, Morey’s airport was first known as Pennco Field and later Royal Airport in an unsuccessful partnership with Royal Transit Co. to establish a commuter airline between Madison and Chicago. Morey lost his hangar and his airplane in a fire in 1932 on the property south of Lake Monona, so he returned to barnstorming and charter work. In 1938 he became the manager of the new Madison Municipal Airport.
